Akita is not too common breed in the Czech Republic, nor in Central/Eastern Europe contrary to Japan (breed´s country of origin) or US (country of development). Akitas are very appreciated in Japan, they´ve been attributed as a national treasure and are assigned as a symbol of good health, wealth and prosperity and happines. It was really touchy and led into splitting the breed itno two variations - "japanese"Akita Inu and American Akita. Unfortunately you cannot find too many reliable information in the czech language, by contrary sometimes you can read untrue and misleading information (e.g. about breeders in the US crossed their imported dogs again with german shepherds or mastiff-like dogs. It is a real nonsense, there exists no evidence about this, whereas you can search&find all US pedigrees up to first imported akitas at the central database.) 

Owning an akita has been my dream since my childhood and I made this dream come true as soon as I could in my adulthood. I reserved a puppy in the slovakian Mexican O´Thoorn Kennel, owned by my friend Katarina Sucha. Unfortunately puppies hadn´t arrived so I went to Ostrava, city situated on the czech&polish boarder, for the last available czech pup, my Arishka.

Akita is a quite unique breed with its special chracter and is famous for its loyalty and devotion to his master. They demand a real consitency when educating and kind approach of his master as well as his understanding at the same time. By physical punishments and beating you will get only one stiffnecked akita with broken heart.

Akita belongs to working breed group in the US but is not a common working breed as this term is used e.g. for German Shepherds or Rottweillers. However Akita has a working potential and willingness to work - its up to you to find the appropiate motivation and the area of interest. It could be obedience trainig, agility, dogtrekking, tracking etc. Many akitas have passed so called canistherapy exams so they succesfully work together with their masters as an care occupation team, for disabled clients or in asylum homes for children .. 

Akita is a large, self-confident dog, who could be fearless guard dog and lovely companion at the same time. If you could provide your akita appropriate education and a its fixed place within your family, you will get the best and most loyal friend.
